So, on the right you can see the images of the Kharybdis. Thsi thing is massive, from the size of the objects in the images it looks like the model is at least a foot tall with a footprint 10 inches by 10 inches. That is massive. To give you an idea of what I am really talking about here though... read on. 1 - The scale of your game - Warhammer 40K, at its roots, is a skirmish game and the mechanics and the scale of the minis reflect this. There was an existang system for playing massive games with huge pieces, which was scaled down to about 6mm called Warhammer 40K Epic. In a 28mm game, you shouldn't be running around with models which take up almost a square foot of the table on their own. This model takes up almost a square foot of space on the gaming table when "landed". The issue with this monster is that most tables will have 24 square feet, a quarter of which at least 6 of those feet are covered in terrain which usually doesn't even leave a 1x1 foot square to land anything. 2 - Transporting your models - I play several games. The ones I have the most trouble transporting are the ones in the 28mm and 30mm scale. The order of how hard my stuff is to transport is: Warhammer 40K (28mm) Warmachine (30mm) BattleTech (6mm) Malifaux (30mm) The reason for the difficulty transporting the Warhammer 40K models is that of my models I have to transport 6-8 vehicles which have a footprint of about 6"x 4". Warmachine is hard to transport if I |
3 - Cost to the players -
Any war game has costs associated with it. As each game grows these costs can fluctuate and go up with new releases or with new editions. But this is getting downright retarded. I haven't even begun to guess how much this thing costs, but at some point the players are going to break and just tell you to screw yourself.
I think in the end, and getting off my soapbox, I believe that Games Workshop might want to look into re-exploring the idea of Epic. I know they shut down the product line down but it may be worth re-examining as their game line seems to be growing larger and larger in physical size and they might be looking at outgrowing their table space and their players wallets.
Until next time -
